About the Forum

Finance, in all its forms, is a subject that either evokes intense interest or intense fear and confusion. It is also notorious for its jargon and arcane formulae. Those who look to the financial media for sober analysis, are often disappointed, as more often than not, they merely play to the gallery.

In 2008, Parag Parikh Financial Advisory Services Ltd. in aegis with the Rotary Club of Bombay Mid-Town, set about to remedy this. Hence... The Financial Opportunities Forum.

It is one more manifestation of the Rotary Club's avowed mission of societal enrichment through dissemination of knowledge. That it was not just a variant of an investment club, was evident from the fact that it was conceptualised in the throes of one of the deepest bear markets in recent times.

The Forum's twin objectives are:
1. To demystify financial concepts without oversimplifying them.
2. To offer dispassionate analysis of topical events.

Apart from throwing light on the logic behind the hard numbers, several presentations also dwell upon aspects of human behavior driving certain corporate actions.

The members comprise an eclectic set, spanning various age groups and occupations. The only common bond uniting them is an abiding desire to learn something new.

The key presenters

Rajeev Thakkar

He is the Chief Investment Officer of PPFAS Mutual Fund.

Regarded by many as a polymath, his presentations, cover diverse topics ranging from the state of the shipping industry, corporate leadership, capital allocation and individual companies like Google. His audience usually takes to him wholeheartedly, as he possesses the endearing quality of 'talking to' them and not 'talking down to' them. Apart from them, certain presentations may be made by a few of their colleagues on account of them being well versed with a specific topic.

Raunak Onkar

Raunak tracks the Technology, Pharma & Media sectors at PPFAS Mutual Fund among others. Apart from his primary areas of research he has a wide variety of interests spanning across sectors & industries. Through his presentations he has covered diverse topics from Media, Pharma, Technology, Retail (online & offline), Telecom to topics like Disruption & Business Failures which synthesizes his reading interests. He brings in his observational style to the presentations which make them engaging & provide lots of resources for further research.

Raj Mehta

Beginning his career as an intern with PPFAS Mutual Fund in 2012, Raj swiftly moved up the ranks, and is currently part of the Fund Management team. Apart from being a Commerce graduate from University of Mumbai (N.M. College), he is also a Fellow Member of Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) and a CFA Charter Holder. He has also earned a Certificate for the 'NSE Debt Market Module' issued jointly by FIMMDA and NCFM. He is also featured as a regular participant on various TV channels and a columnist in select financial publications.

This is what a couple of long-time Rotarians have to say

I have been attending the Financial Opportunities Forum since its inception. I have found the sessions very informative, insightful and educative. The sessions cover a wide range of topics, ranging from behavioral finance and its effects on the investment psyche to the teachings of Warren Buffett and everything in between. The subjects covered are well researched and professionally delivered."

Rtn. Sunil Gautam

Attending the Financial Opportunities Forum (FoF), every month, is a great learning experience for those who wish to invest in equity as a source of financial growth.....and for those who have a long term growth vision of their wealth."
